EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Lane County has asked a Coos County judge to reconsider his ruling that the Lane County Board of Commissioners violated Oregon public meetings law by meeting privately to create commissioner-assistant positions in 2009.
The Register-Guard reports the county also objected to a request for limits on commissioners the judge individually faulted, saying it could affect the entire board.
In a ruling that has drawn statewide attention, Coos County Circuit Judge Michael Gillespie said Lane County Commissioners Rob Handy and Pete Sorenson willfully violated state law by meeting privately with a majority of the board to line up votes to add five part-time assistant positions to the budget.
State law requires majorities or quorums of locally elected public bodies to meet in open sessions for most public business.
