PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik did not return for the start of the second period after taking a shot off his hand against the San Jose Sharks.

Orpik skated off shaking his hand with just under two minutes left in the opening period Wednesday after blocking Patrick Marleau’s shot from the right circle. Orpik got to the bench and was immediately escorted up the tunnel to the team’s locker room.

The Penguins had no immediate update on his status.

Pittsburgh is already banged up, opening the game without 10 regulars. That includes Sidney Crosby, who’s out indefinitely with a concussion, and defenseman Paul Martin, who missed his second game with an upper body injury.
