KENNEWICK, Wash. (AP) — Haney the Chihuahua moves fast, despite a bum leg, and he’s still on the lam from the new Benton County, Wash., animal shelter in Kennewick. Shelter Manager Larry Taylor says he’s gotten calls from people who think they saw Haney from Pasco to North Richland but nothing has panned out. Haney was in an outside kennel area last Friday when he zipped under a gap in the fence.

Animal Control Officer Tiffani Garner captured him earlier as an abandoned animal that reportedly had been struck by a vehicle. The Tri-City Herald says that when Haney bolted to freedom, Garner chased him on foot for about five miles before she gave up.

Garner jokes, “I should have named him Houdini.” The shelter manager says the fence problem is being fixed.
