DOVER, Del. (AP) — Delaware State University says it has licensed technology developed by its researchers that could be used to help diagnose cancer and other diseases.
The technology uses lasers to scan for metal particles that attach themselves to proteins or enzymes in blood or other bodily fluids.
Noureddine Melikechi, the principal investigator for the university’s optics lab, says the technology could be used to screen for hard-to-detect brain and ovarian cancers. Redmond, Wash.-based Photon Machines Inc., which specializes in developing laser technology, has licensed the technology.
Photon Machines President Steve Buckley says the technology could eventually be used at doctors’ offices.
