BELLEVUE, Wash. (AP) — A Bellevue, Wash., Fire Department spokesman says it took firefighters to extinguish a small kitchen fire in a rental home after a resident’s attempt to douse a flaming pan of cooking oil with a cup of water failed.

Lt. Eric Keenan says firefighters were able to cover and smother the burning oil and extinguish a small amount of fire on the surrounding cabinets Thursday afternoon. Damage to the house is estimated at $20,000.

Keenan notes that water won’t extinguish a hot oil fire, which should be smothered with a lid or metal pan.
