PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Police in northwest Pakistan say they have arrested an American staying in the area on an expired visa.

The arrest comes at a time of extra scrutiny of foreigners in Pakistani following the detention of a CIA contractor who shot two Pakistanis in the eastern city of Lahore.

Police officer Haroon Khan says the man was arrested Friday in the main northwestern city of Peshawar.

He identified him as Aaron Mark DeHaven and said he was from West Virginia. It was not clear what he was doing in Pakistan.

The U.S. Embassy said it was looking into the case.
