MUSCAT, Oman (AP) — Omani security forces have blocked roads to a seaside town after deadly clashes between pro-democracy protesters and riot police.
Monday’s effort by the government troops appears aimed at sealing off Sohar, about 120 miles (200 kilometers) northwest of the capital of Muscat, to isolate the protesters and keep crowds from growing.
State hospitals reported that at least two people died Sunday when police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse hundreds of demonstrators who took to the streets in Sohar.
Protesters are seeking jobs and a greater political voice in Oman, which is tightly controlled by the ruling sultan.
