TORONTO (AP) — The New York Rangers failed to get Brad Richards away from the Dallas Stars and settled for acquiring center John Mitchell from the Toronto Maple Leafs for a seventh-round pick in next year’s draft.

The deal was completed Monday before the NHL trade deadline.

The 26-year-old Mitchell has been in the Maple Leafs organization since being chosen in the fifth round of the 2003 draft. In 159 career NHL games, he has 20 goals and 55 points.

Mitchell, who was currently with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL, had two goals and an assist in 23 Maple Leafs games this season.
