ST. HELENS, Ore. (AP) — The man accused of killing the police chief of Rainier is set to be arraigned Friday afternoon in St. Helens on an aggravated murder charge.

The Columbia County district attorney’s office said Friday morning that 21-year-old Daniel Butts was scheduled to appear by video at 3 p.m. in Columbia County Circuit Court.

Butts is being held in jail after his release from a Portland hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound.

Butts is accused of shooting Rainier police Chief Ralph Painter, who had gone to a car stereo shop to investigate a report of an attempted car theft.
