SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — The Moccasin Bay Association on Lake Roosevelt has been fined $13,500 by the state for illegally burning a 12-slip boat dock last June.

The state Department of Ecology said the burning violated state law because the dock included hard foam, metals and other material that polluted the air with toxic chemicals. Those toxic chemicals can penetrate deep into lungs.

The dock was on National Park Service land at the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area, and Spokane Tribal members were the first to report the burn.

The association can appeal the fine within 30 days.
