Creighton edges Southern Illinois 72-66 in OT

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — Gregory Echenique scored 16 points to help Creighton to a 72-66 overtime victory against Southern Illinois on Friday night.

In his first start for the Bluejays, Echenique scored to start overtime and provide a 59-57 lead. He also had a team-high nine rebounds for Creighton (11-5, 3-1 Missouri Valley).

Kaleb Korver added 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Antoine Young scored 13 and Doug McDermott 12 for Creighton, which overcame two seven-point deficits in the second half.

Mamadou Seck had game highs of 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Salukis (8-7, 2-2).

The Salukis made five more baskets than the Bluejays and outrebounded them 42-32. But Creighton went 20 of 31 from the foul line to Southern Illinois’ 5 of 11.

The Salukis’ leading scorer and rebounder, Gene Teague, scored six points in 17 minutes as he returned after missing three games with a sprained ankle.
