McNeese State beats Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 72-49

LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) — Diego Kapelan scored 17 points to lead four McNeese State players in double figures in a 72-49 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday.

Stephan Martin and P.J. Alawoye added 12 points each and Patrick Richard chipped in 10 for the Cowboys (9-5) in the Southland Conference opener for both teams.

McNeese State scored 33 points off of 22 turnovers and shot 53.7 percent from the field (29 of 54).

Despite a 10-of-15 shooting performance by the Islanders (66.7 percent), McNeese State led 41-29 at the half. The Cowboys then held the Islanders (5-10) to 23.1 percent shooting (6 of 26) after halftime.

The Cowboys opened the second half with nine straight points as part of an 18-3 run to give the Islanders their second-straight loss.

Demond Watt scored 16 points and Justin Reynolds added 10 for the Islanders, who couldn’t get coach Perry Clark his 300th victory.
