CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — A Corvallis-based Oregon National Guard unit has been awarded the Presidential Unit Citation — the highest award a military unit can receive.

The Corvallis Gazette-Times says the award was presented Saturday to Bravo Company of the 2nd Battalion, 162nd Infantry Regiment, of the 41 Infantry Brigade Combat Team. It was honored for its heroism in the city of Fallujah during November 2004 when it experienced some of the heaviest fighting in the Iraq War.

About 400 friends and family gathered in the drill hall of the Corvallis Armory for the ceremony. It’s the first time an Oregon National Guard unit has received the award since World War II.
