WASHINGTON (AP) — A suspicious package is disrupting commuters headed to the Capitol as police are blocking riders from leaving the Capitol South Metro station.
Capitol Police were tightly controlling where people could walk outside the station Monday morning. Metro riders trying to exit at the station were being redirected to the Federal Center Southwest and Eastern Market stations.
Shortly after, Metro said the station on the blue and orange lines is closed.
Police say the suspicious package is near the Metro station entrance. There was a heavier than normal police presence in the area.
It wasn’t clear whether additional precautions were being taken because of the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords on Saturday.
