JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius says he faces a “scary” challenge from U.S. rival Jerome Singleton in the 100 meters at the IPC World Championships for disabled athletes in New Zealand later this month.
Pistorius, the king of disabled athletics and world record holder in the 100, 200 and 400 meters, edged Singleton by 0.03 seconds to win Paralympic gold in Beijing in 2008. The South African beat his American rival by a similarly small margin at last year’s Paralympic World Cup.
Pistorius says it’s going to be “quite scary running against him in Christchurch” and adds that he is expecting it to be “my hardest race.”
The 24-year-old Pistorius, the defending world champion in the 100, 200 and 400, spearheads South Africa’s 35-member team at the Jan. 21-30 championships.
