EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Duck fans raised the roof at McArthur Court in Eugene, but their cheers weren’t enough to carry more than 1,100 miles to Arizona to help their football team become No. 1.

The 3,500 fans who watched big-screen TVS Monday night in the basketball arena famed for its thundering acoustics created a deafening din when Oregon came back to tie the game in the fourth quarter after forcing a fumble.

But all was silence after Auburn kicked a field goal in the final seconds to win the BCS championship 22-19.

As fans streamed into the cold and foggy night, T-shirt salesman James Bradley summed up the feelings of many.

“It was still a great season, folks,” he said as people walked by uninterested in T-shirts commemorating the game.
