STEVENAGE, England (AP) — Police say a man has been charged with common assault after punching a Stevenage player after the team’s surprise win over Newcastle in the third round of the FA Cup.
Robert Fitzgerald ran onto the pitch after the whistle and floored defender Scott Laird with a right hook.
Hertfordshire Police said Tuesday that the 24-year-old Fitzgerald, who handed himself in at a local police station Monday, was to appear before Stevenage Magistrates on Jan. 26.
The incident was shown live on ESPN in Britain. Stevenage, which plays in the fourth tier of the English league, beat Premier League team Newcastle 3-1.
