Qvale ties blocks record in 77-70 win for Montana

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — Brian Qvale tied the all-time Big Sky Conference record for blocked shots Saturday as Montana defeated Portland State 77-70.

Qvale had 17 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks for the Grizzlies (13-5, 5-1 Big Sky). He now has 212 career blocks to tie Montana alum Daren Engellant (1988-92) for the conference record.

Will Cherry added 19 points and seven assists for Montana, while Art Steward had 17 points and eight rebounds.

Charles Odum led Sacramento State (9-8, 2-3) with 24 points. Phillips Thomas added 18 points, and Chris Harriel had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Grizzlies broke open a close game when Shawn Stockton hit a 3-pointer to start an 8-0 run and Cherry capped it with a three-point play with 5:21 remaining to put Montana on top 62-51.
