County sheriff considering volunteer patrols

FAIRGROUNDS — Clark County Sheriff Garry Lucas is considering launching a county volunteer program similar to Vancouver police’s Neighbors On Watch program. The program involves deploying volunteer citizens willing to drive around an assigned area and keep an eye out for suspicious activities. “The objective is to put more eyes on the community. There will be training and radios given during tours of ‘duty,’” George Vartanian writes in the latest Fairgrounds Neighborhood Association newsletter. “There will be no engaging with potential problems, only to observe and report.” The idea is in its infancy, and the sheriff is looking to gauge citizen interest. Anyone interested should send an e-mail to gvart@comcast.net with NOW in the subject line. Include a name and phone number.
