SEATTLE (AP) — A national organization that recruits recent college graduates into teaching is ready to expand its program in Washington state next fall.

Teach for American announced Tuesday it will bring up to 35 corps members to Puget Sound schools starting next fall.

Janis Ortega told The Seattle Times the organization that operates in 39 other regions across the country has decided it has enough momentum to go forward. The group ran a small pilot in the Seattle area in the mid-1990s, but wants to come back permanently.

The Federal Way School District was the first to sign up. Seattle Public Schools is going to give Teach for America recruits a chance to interview for open positions.

Teach For America also has raised $4.8 million to support a program here. The largest two donors are the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Bezos Foundation.
