The Mount St. Helens Institute will host a panel discussion featuring scientists and poets Jan. 27 in Portland’s Pearl District.
The theme tying the disciplines together: Chaos leads to opportunity.
The fundraiser will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Keen Footwear, 926 N.W. 13th Ave. Advance tickets can be purchased online for $20 at http://www.mshinstitute.org or picked up for $25 at the door.
Panelists include John Bishop, a Washington State University Vancouver researcher focused on life recolonizing the pumice plain; University of Washington volcanologist Brittany Brand; Jolie Kaytes, a WSU professor of landscape architecture who spent the past summer as a writer-in-residence at Mount St. Helens; and Derek Sheffield, a poet who teaches at Wenatchee Valley College and spent a week on the volcano in July with other writers and scientists. The discussion will be moderated by Portland author Christine Colasurdo and Brad Johnson of Second Story Interactive Exhibits.
The event also will include a silent auction featuring the work of Mount St. Helens photographers Darryl Lloyd, Simmons Buntin, David Anderson and Steve Terrill.
