YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) — The Yakima City Council has approved the hiring of David Mercier as interim city manager to help or temporarily succeed the ailing Dick Zais.

The 61-year-old Mercier directs a Vancouver-based consulting firm and was the city manager of Spokane Valley from 2003 to 2010. He is expected to take over immediately for Zais, who was stricken with a serious blood-clotting condition two weeks ago.

Zais is expected to retire this summer.

The Yakima Herald-Republic says Mercier was hired at the same pay as outgoing Assistant City Manager Dave Zabell, who was making $127,647. Zabell recently left for the top job in the Tacoma suburb of Fife.

The City Council made its decision Tuesday.
