DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — NASCAR president Mike Helton has confirmed that drivers only will be allowed to race for one championship this season.
The rule is designed to prevent Sprint Cup drivers from dominating the second-tier Nationwide Series. Full-time Cup drivers have won the last five Nationwide titles.
Helton also says NASCAR is leaning toward a simpler points system for all three of its national series.
The Associated Press reported this week that NASCAR has told teams it wants to scrap its 36-year-old scoring system for a format that would award points based on finishing position.
Helton says bonus points would be added to put an emphasis on winning races.
