OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — A consultant says the new Washington State Data Center being built in Olympia is much larger than what the state will need to meet its future computer needs and that some of the excess space could be leased out.
The Olympian says the report estimates the state might need less than 10 percent of the high-cost space being built for information storage and computer operations. That’s because technological advances allow more data and processes to be consolidated on scattered computer servers.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Information Services says the agency had always planned to leave some of the center vacant for future needs, but is reviewing the report and its plans.
