The Hudson’s Bay boys basketball team fended off a big second-half charge by Prairie and beat the Falcons 69-65 to remain alone atop the Class 3A Greater St. Helens League standings.
Bay led 40-30 at halftime and stretched its advantage to 18 points in the third quarter.
But Prairie, which was led by Ryan Denny’s 20 points, charged back to take a four-point lead early in the fourth quarter.
“But then we were able to get a couple of big steals, hits some shots and made our free throws to close it out,” Bay coach Andy Meyer said.
Derrick Brooks had 20 points and Tra Ponder added 19 for Hudson’s Bay, which made 23 of 26 free throws.
The win kept the Eagles (14-2, 7-1) a half-game ahead of Camas. Bay travels to Camas on Tuesday.
Camas 57, at Columbia River 37 — Camas took a one-point advantage early in the third quarter and ran away to keep pace in the 3A GSHL standings.
Camas finished with a 15-3 advantage in the fourth quarter.
“With their size, it’s not a good matchup for us,” River coach David Long said. “They beat us bad on the offensive boards.”
Jacob Kaler scored 15 points to lead the Papermakers.
Mountain View 83, at Fort Vancouver 57 — Zach Torson scored 27 points, and Ryan Johnson 25 as Mountain View won at Fort. Sean McCauley added 11 points for the Thunder (9-7, 5-3).
Keith Kirkland led the Trappers in scoring with 17 points.
At Toledo 67, La Center 60 — Austin Myers had 18 points, eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks in the loss for the Wildcats. Colbe Neuberger added 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Girls basketball
Camas 45, at Columbia River 30 — Kendra Preuninger scored 16 points and Kayla Roche 12 as Camas picked up the 3A Greater St. Helens League victory on the road.
Camas (11-5, 6-3) jumped out to a 13-3 first-quarter advantage and never looked back.
Lauren Wetzel and Lauren Heller each scored 10 for Columbia River (3-14, 2-7).
At Prairie 77, Hudson’s Bay 22 — Angela Gelhar scored 23 points to go with four assists, seven steals and four rebounds as Prairie remained undefeated.
Heather Corral added 20 points, five steals, five assists and five rebounds for the Falcons, while teammates Andrea Smith and Kelsey Asplund combined for 15 rebounds.
At Mountain View 53, Fort Vancouver 28 — The Trappers came out in a triangle-and-two defense and led 6-2 after the first quarter. Then Mountain View made the necessary adjustments and pulled away with a 21-4 second quarter.
Carly Holboke scored 13 points with three 3-pointers, and Emma DuChesne had 12 points on four 3-pointers for Mountain View (11-5, 7-1). Raina Shadle had 10 rebounds.
Mar’shay Moore led Fort in scoring with 14 points.
La Center 57, at Toledo 29 — Katrina Chamberlain had a big game with 26 points, 18 rebounds and six steals as the Wildcats kept pace with the Trico League leaders with a solid road win.
Marissa Moore had eight points, 10 assists and seven rebounds for La Center (10-5, 7-2), which trails first-place Ilwaco by one game.
