SEATTLE (AP) — China is Washington state’s biggest foreign trade partner, with most of the state’s exports coming from Boeing and other aerospace companies.
But The Seattle Times reports that the nature of that trade is subtly changing, reflecting China’s appetite for materials to feed its booming industries.
Trade officials say more raw materials, food and basic commodities, things such as timber, copper and silicon, are being shipped to China through Seattle. Among the state’s top 10 exports to China, those rising fastest include chemicals, iron ore, silicon, wood and fur. State and business officials say trade, especially to China and other Asian countries, will be critical for lifting Washington out of the recession.
