Talking Points 01/24

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

Week 17: Green Bay 10, Chicago 3.

That result qualified the Packers for the postseason.

Yep, the Bears could have finished off their rival in the regular season.

It didn’t happen.

But the Bears probably didn’t imagine they would see the No. 6 seeded-Packers again in the playoffs.

Afterall winning three consecutive road games (four if you count Week 17) would be a monumental task for any playoff team.

Cheeseheads can rejoice for they found the right time to get hot.

It took nearly 70 years for the Bears and Packers to meet up again in the playoff game.

Never before have the Steelers and Packers locked horns for a title, so we really like this matchup.

You’ve got Titletown vs. Steel City. Cheeseheads vs. Terrible Towel.

But what we’ll have on Feb. 6 at Cowboys Stadium for Super Bowl XLV is a classic first-time matchup.

Somewhere, Vince Lombardi is smiling, and not just for his Packers.

3

Once again, we have a Grand Slam tennis tournament heading into its second week without an American male remaining in the singles draw.

Andy Roddick, the last U.S. man standing in Australia, was knocked out in the fourth round early Sunday morning Pacific time.

Prospects looked good for a U.S. rebound last season, but once again, the Americans underachieved Down Under. There isn’t even a Williams sister to help bail the U.S. out this time.

The last hope remains on the doubles court in Bob and Mike Bryan.
