SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The leader of Pyeongchang’s bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics says the campaign will not be affected by the provincial governor’s ouster in a political corruption scandal.
The Yonhap news agency says the Seoul Supreme Court upheld a lower court conviction of Gangwon Province Gov. Lee Kwang-jae that strips him of his job.
Lee received a six-month suspended prison term and was ordered to pay $102,000 on charges of receiving illegal political funds.
Gangwon Province is home to Pyeongchang, the city bidding a third straight time for the Olympics after narrow defeats for the 2010 and 2014 Games.
Pyeongchang is competing against Munich and the French town of Annecy. The IOC will select the host by secret ballot on July 6 in Durban, South Africa.
