ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — The Washington Capitals have been busy on the first day of free agency, signing right wing Joel Ward, defenseman Roman Hamrlik and center Jeff Halpern.
The Capitals also traded goaltender Semyon Varlamov on Friday to the Colorado Avalanche for a first-round draft pick in 2012 and a second-round selection in 2012 or 2013.
Ward signed a four-year contract worth $12 million. Hamrlik gets a two-year deal for $7 million. Former Capitals captain Halpern is back for one year at $825,000.
