JERUSALEM (AP) — Former Duke basketball star Jon Scheyer has joined Israeli powerhouse Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Because he is Jewish, Scheyer is eligible to become an Israeli and not count against a league cap on foreign players.

Scheyer was introduced to fans Sunday. The reigning Israeli champion lost the title game of this year’s European championship to Greece’s Panathinaikos. Scheyer said he was used to high expectations and was looking forward to competing in Europe.

Scheyer led Duke to a national championship in his senior year in 2010. The 6-foot-5 guard was passed over in the NBA draft and then suffered a freak injury when he was poked in the eye on the Miami Heat’s summer league team.
