A man died Sunday afternoon after he jumped off a boat in the Columbia River near Government Island and apparently drowned.

Paramedic Kevin Stromberg of the Vancouver Fire Department said the man struggled in the water and those in the boat could not get to him.

A person on a personal water craft reached him and took him to Government Island, Stromberg said.

Stromberg said the call for aid came in about 5:30 p.m.

Portland Fireboat 17 transported the man to Vancouver’s Steamboat Landing on the Washington shore, where efforts to revive him failed.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man’s name, age and residence were not available.

Stromberg said the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office and the Port of Portland also responded.

Government Island is a popular spot for camping and boating activities.
