Battle Ground boy dies in plane crash

An 11-year-old Battle Ground boy died in a Saturday night plane crash in eastern South Dakota, authorities said.

Stefan Kemppainen, a student at Amboy Middle School, was in a single-engine plane piloted by a relative, Clark Kopman, 45, of rural Bryant, S.D. Also aboard was 11-year-old Sawyer Kopman. All died in the crash.

The Mike and Renee Kemppainen family of Battle Ground was in South Dakota for a family reunion. Five of their six children were at the reunion with one in Europe.

Hamlin County Sheriff Dan Mack said the plane was flying at a low altitude about 9:15 p.m. hit a power line and crashed into a field near Hayti.
