Letter: Learning shouldn’t take a summer off

The Columbian
Published: July 5, 2011, 12:00am

School is finished for the summer. Kids rush eagerly for the exit door. All parties involved hope it was a productive year. However, when all is said and done, a well-informed and concerned parent is the linchpin for a child’s long-term academic success.

While things are fresh in mind, a parent might talk about the past year. If there has been a problem, try to resolve the situation as much as possible before school resumes in September.

Summer might be a good time to hire a tutor. Education DVDs can be purchased. Bookstores have booklets on various subjects and grade levels. Visiting the library, museum and attending weekend events are options also.

Keeping math and reading skills sharp is a must for a better start when school resumes in the fall.

Don’t wait for Superman.
