ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said the city is one of three selected to be early partners in President Obama’s Better Buildings Challenge.

Authorities said Atlanta aims to reduce energy consumption in the downtown district by 20 percent over the next decade as part of the program.

Reed said in a statement that more than two million square feet of building space in Atlanta would be improved as a part of the effort.

The other two cities named as early partners of the Better Buildings Challenge are Los Angeles and Seattle.
