SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) — Former University of Oregon quarterback Nate Costa has been sworn in as a Springfield, Ore., police officer, embarking on what he calls his “dream job.” Near the end of his football career with the Ducks, Costa began job-shadowing Springfield detectives. He has completed a yearlong internship with the department and was sworn in Tuesday.

In August, he’ll enroll in a 16-week training program at the Oregon Public Safety Academy in Salem. For now, he’ll work with a field training officer on the streets of Springfield.

He tells The Register-Guard he’s always wanted to be a police officer and loves the idea that “you don’t have to sit behind a desk all day.”
