CONNELL, Wash. (AP) — The Coyote Ridge Corrections Center plans to put two therapy dogs in the prison’s assisted living unit that houses 55 geriatric offenders.

The prison says the dogs will serve as companions and live with two offender handlers in the minimum security unit. The dogs are expected to bring emotional support to the elderly inmates.

The new dogs are an expansion of the dog training program at the Connell prison. It’s run by A2Z Animal Sheltering Services, which operates the Tri-Cities Animal Shelter. The program has grown to include 22 prison dogs and 34 medium security offenders.
