Letter: Money for nothing, parking for free

The Columbian
Published: July 9, 2011, 12:00am

The cost of $158 million for three parking garages — can we please get serious about wasteful spending? These three park-and-ride garages will never produce parking revenue, will never pay real estate taxes and will have an annual maintenance bill more than you can believe. All this so that a small percentage of our residents can drive and park in Vancouver to ride the MAX light-rail line.

Seriously, why are we going to spend billions of dollars to provide transportation across the Columbia River so that people who work in Portland will be able to get taxpayer-subsidized transportation?

How are we going to handle the additional traffic in Vancouver around the parking garage? Have we thought about that? Use the current transfer station in Hazel Dell and use the buses to run people all the way to Portland; it is more economical.
