LONDON (AP) — Britain is increasing funding for its team at the 2012 London Olympics, although the spending per athlete is dropping slightly from Beijing.

British Olympic Association chief executive Andy Hunt announced on Tuesday that $21 million will be spent on the 550 athletes on home soil.

That works out to $38,000 per athlete compared to $41,200 at the 2008 Games.

Britain finished fourth in the medal standings in Beijing.

Hunt says “we have to recognize that maintaining that fourth place in the medal table is going to be very, very tough.”
