APPLETON, Wis. (AP) — A man seriously injured in a 2009 boiler explosion at the Appleton Medical Center will be compensated for his medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering.

Daniel Quaintance’s (KWAINT-ehns-ehs) attorneys say the court approved a $1.6 million settlement Tuesday with the boiler service company, BurCon Services, and its insurance company.

The explosion blew a manhole cover off the boiler, hitting Quaintance in his head. He had extreme blood loss, facial fractures, traumatic brain injury, respiratory failure, eye damage, hearing loss and some facial nerve damage.

Quaintance is a maintenance mechanic/service technician for the medical center and was following directions from a BurCon technician, whom his attorneys contend failed to follow accepted practices.

A message left at Burcon was not immediately returned Tuesday.
