BURLINGTON, Wash. (AP) — A Washington State Patrol chase ended with a trooper shooting the fleeing driver in a potato field near Burlington.

Trooper Keith Leary says the wounded man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and is expected to recover. No troopers were hurt.

Leary says a trooper attempted to pull over a speeding car about 1 a.m. Wednesday near Bellingham. The car sped away on a chase south on Interstate 5 and back roads. Leary says the driver took to dirt roads and ended up in the potato field where he was shot.

The details of the shooting are under investigation by the Skagit County sheriff’s office.
