US Open singles champs to get record $1.8 million

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — The U.S. Tennis Association says the singles champions at this year’s U.S. Open will each receive a record $1.8 million.

Total prize money is rising by more than $1 million to $23.7 million, the most ever for the Grand Slam tournament.

The USTA said Wednesday the 2011 tournament would have an increase of about 6 percent in men’s and women’s singles prize money.

The U.S. Open starts Aug. 29.
