OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Olympia police say the baby that was found in a trash can at a hospital is in stable condition at Tacoma General Hospital.

Det. Brenda Anderson said Thursday the boy was born prematurely and it remains to be seen whether he’ll have developmental complications from oxygen deprivation.

The baby was blue with the umbilical cord around his neck when he was found Tuesday by a nurse who heard grunting noises from the trash can at Providence St. Peter Hospital.

The Olympian reports the mother, 23-year-old Jasmine Marie Ritchey, is held in the Thurston County Jail for investigation of attempted murder and child abandonment.
