Letter: Officials can tighten restrictions

The Columbian
Published: July 16, 2011, 12:00am

The July 8 story “Council to review policy on fireworks,” about the Vancouver City Council’s review, noted that the Clark County commissioners do not plan on tightening the restrictions on fireworks in the county. Do the commissioners all leave for the week before the Fourth? Do they not have dogs? Or young children? Or better yet, not have to get up early and go to work?

I love the Fourth as much as any other American. I appreciate the symbolism of the fireworks as a nod to the wars that have been fought to bring me freedom and have made this country great. But the warlike conditions in our neighborhoods created by unbridled overzealous celebrators all hours of the night without any fear of enforcement has to stop. Limit the blasts to the Fourth.
