US loses 9-7 to Germany at water polo worlds

SHANGHAI (AP) — Germany defeated the United States 9-7 at the water polo world championships on Monday.

Germany led 4-0 after the opening period. Moritz Oeler scored three goals for Germany while U.S. captain Anthony Azevedo had two goals.

Two-time former champion Hungary defeated Montenegro 11-10 behind four goals by Peter Biros, including the tiebreaker with three minutes left on opening day of the 16-team men’s competition.

Aaron Younger scored with 44 seconds remaining to give Australia a 9-8 win over Romania, Spain defeated Kazakhstan 18-5 and Croatia cruised past Brazil 14-5.
