DETROIT (AP) — After a stellar first half of the season by ace Justin Verlander, the Detroit Tigers find themselves right in the thick of the AL Central title race.
Their playoff chances might hinge on whether the rest of the starting rotation provides enough support. Max Scherzer pitched well Saturday and Brad Penny scrapped in Sunday’s 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox, but the Tigers are also interested in adding another pitcher before the trade deadline.
Detroit hosts Oakland in a two-game series starting Tuesday night. Rick Porcello will pitch Tuesday, but the Tigers have been trying to figure out who will pitch Wednesday in the No. 5 starter’s spot.
