LAKEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The National Ski Areas Association says a ski season that stretched into July helped U.S. resorts set a record this year for skier visits.

The Lakewood, Colo.-based trade group in May estimated there were 60.1 million skier visits at U.S. resorts this season. Based on final survey results, the association says resorts finished the season with 60.54 million skier visits. That’s about 40,000 more than the previous record, set in the 2007-2008 season.

The trade group says nearly a dozen ski areas were still open or reopened for the July 4 weekend, after strong spring snow. The association estimates there were nearly 50,000 skier visits over the July 4 holiday alone.
