Spieth, Barrett reach semis at US Junior Amateur

BREMERTON, Wash. (AP) — Jordan Spieth of Dallas beat Andrew Whalen of Ephrata, Wash., 2 and 1 to advance to the semifinals at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championships on Friday.

Spieth, who won in 2009, moved closer to joining Tiger Woods as the only multiple winners of the event. Woods won this tournament three straight years, 1991-93.

Spieth was to face Adam Ball of Richmond, Va., in the semifinals later Friday. Ball ousted U.S. Open qualifer Beau Hossler of Mission Viejo, Calif., 2 and 1.

The other semifinal matched Chelso Barrett of Keene, N.H., and Nicolas Echavarria of Colombia.

Barrett beat No. 2 seed Will Starke of Chapin, S.C., 1 up. Echavarria, 16, beat Ryan Benton of Dothan, Ala., 2 and 1.

The 36-hole championship match will be played Saturday.
