LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) — Cowlitz Public Utility District commissioners voted Tuesday to suspend bill collections if Social Security or federal pension checks are delayed by an impasse over raising the federal debt ceiling.

Commissioner Mark McCrady says the vote was intended to make the point that failure to reach an agreement will affect the lives of everyday citizens.

The Daily News reports the Longview-based utility would typically send a warning notice to late-payers and shut off power about a week later.
