LAKEWOOD, Wash. (AP) — Fire and rescue officials in the Lakewood, Wash., area say a 13-year-old boy pulled from American Lake about 45 minutes after he disappeared while swimming has died.

West Pierce Fire and Rescue’s Jenni Sharp tells KIRO-TV the boy’s friends sounded the alarm Thursday afternoon when five minutes passed and they hadn’t seen him.

The News Tribune says the Pierce County medical examiner’s office identified the boy as Robert Smith Jr. of Tacoma.
