Hawaiian fest brings dancers, singers, food, crafts to park

The Hoike and Hawaiian Festival will fill Esther Short Park with hula dancers, Portland Taiko, Polynesian singers, food vendors and crafters of Hawaiian arts. The festival kicks off with a performance of the historical drama “Ka Lei Maile Ali`i: The Queen’s Women,” which tells the story of the people who, at great personal peril, supported the nation of Hawaii and its queen.

When: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Where: Esther Short Park, West Eighth and Columbia streets, Vancouver.

The Ho`ike and Hawaiian Festival is one of several events taking place this weekend. Others include a blueberry celebration and lavender festival.

2. Drizzle on the syrup

Visit the Cedar Creek Grist Mill for a celebration of blueberry season with Blueberry Pancake Day. Sample blueberry whole-wheat pancakes with blueberry syrup, learn blueberry recipes and local places to pick berries.

When: 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

3. Just wing it

Interested in raising some friendly fowl? The Coop du Jour Chicken Coop Tour offers the chance to examine urban chicken coops in uptown Vancouver, with a variety of organizations on hand promoting sustainable living and answering questions.

When: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

4. Relax in the lavender

Take a break at Heisen House Vineyards with a celebration of nature’s stress reliever. The second-annual Lavender Festival will feature a vendor fair, kids craft tables, live music and catering. The Tom May Trio will perform from 5-8 p.m.

When: Noon to 8 p.m. Saturday.

5. Not your traditional cowboy film

The town of Absolution, led by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford), doesn’t take kindly to strangers. When a man with no memory (Daniel Craig) stumbles into town, he is shunned out of fear. But when the city is attacked by marauders from the sky, the stranger holds the key to defeating this alien force. “Cowboys & Aliens” is rated PG-13.
